‘More than meets the eye’ is a phrase we use when there seems to be more going on than would appear at first glance, or when something is more interesting, impressive or complicated than at first, we realise.

It’s also our strapline at Hillsborough Dental because we feel it pretty much sums us up - a practice with hidden qualities and the ability to offer treatments beyond the average dental practice.

The problem is, whilst we know we offer these services, we sometimes forget that maybe others don’t, so our hidden gems are maybe just a bit too hidden.

So, to set things right and just so you know - here are six of our more unique treatments.

1 Composite Artistry, for a new smile in one visit

Our clients love composite artistry because it’s quick - often you can achieve your new smile in just one visit, it’s minimally invasive - meaning there’s no need for drilling of teeth or injections and compared with porcelain veneers it’s extremely cost effective.

The technique is an art form where layers of glass-like material are built up, enabling correction of a wide range of problems from discoloured, crooked, chipped and worn teeth through to changing actual tooth proportions.

Advanced training is required to be able to use this technique, but few dentists make this investment.

Dr Kevin learned this art in San Francisco from the world’s leading expert, Dr Newton Fahl of Curitiba, Brazil and with years of practice has achieved some incredible results.

2 Venous lake blemish removal, for beautiful lips

Not everyone knows what they’re called, but most will recognize them - venous lakes are those small purply-blue lumps that can occur on lips or earlobes as we age.

While they’re harmless and don’t require treatment, many people chose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.

Hillsborough Dental is one of the few dental clinics in Northern Ireland who offer laser removal of these blemishes on the lip.

Treatment is simple, almost pain free and takes only 10 minutes.

3 Migraine, facial and jaw pain treatment

Headaches can come on for a variety of reasons, but many people aren’t aware that some are caused by dental issues.

An improper bite alignment or problems with those little joints that allow your jaw to work (the temporomandibular joints or TMJs) can cause symptoms from sensitivity to chronic earache and migraines to tired stiff jaws, pain behind the eyes or difficulty chewing. Even tinnitus may be a symptom of TMD (Tempero Mandibular Disfunction).

4 Facial aesthetics

Some people think it’s odd for a dentist to offer anti-wrinkle treatment (Azzalure and Botox are two well known brands used), but when you stop and think about it - the dental profession is uniquely suited for providing this service.

Not only are cosmetic dentists skilled in assessing the overall balance and aesthetics of the face, but they have also had extensive medical training in head and neck anatomy.

Added to this, the fact they are administering injections every day means they have the technique down to a pain-free fine art.

Only around 16% of dentists have trained to offer this kind of service, and Dr Kevin is one of them.

Qualified in a number of facial rejuvenation treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, this is a route to a more youthful and fresher appearance without the risks of surgery.

5 Adult teeth straightening

We have helped patients from their 20s to 70s achieve the smile they wished for using cosmetic orthodontics.

Dr Kevin is trained in Cfast (tooth coloured brackets), SmileTru and Invisalign clear aligners and Inman aligners, all of which are quick, discreet options which have made teeth straightening more affordable today than in the past.

Although more dentists are now training in this area, it’s nonetheless still something not every practice can offer. These treatments in conjunction with tooth whitening and Composite Artistry can deliver dramatic results in around six months.
